    1. Hydrogen Production: Green hydrogen is produced through water electrolysis, where electricity (preferably from renewable sources) splits water molecules into hydrogen and oxygen. This process generates green hydrogen without carbon emissions.

    2. Iron Reduction: In the pilot project, green hydrogen will be used as a reducing agent. During iron ore reduction, hydrogen reacts with iron oxide (Fe₂O₃) to produce iron (Fe) and water vapor (H₂O). The chemical equation is:

      2Fe2O3+3H24Fe+3H2O

      By using green hydrogen instead of traditional carbon-based reducing agents (like coke), the process becomes more environmentally friendly.

    3. Electric Smelting Furnace: The electric smelting furnace at Christmas Creek will utilize green hydrogen in the reduction process. It provides the necessary energy for iron production while minimizing greenhouse gas emissions.

    4. Sustainability: Fortescue’s commitment to green hydrogen aligns with global efforts to transition toward sustainable energy solutions. By integrating green hydrogen, they contribute to reducing the carbon footprint of iron production.
