Every single engineering report I've seen contradicts your assertion suggesting natural gas and hydrogen storage , piping etc infrastructure are equivalent. This is because hydrogen is one of the smallest atoms on the periodic table.....battling it out with Helium!......This means the incy-bincy little critters are prone to escaping......therefore natural gas technology is not adequate.
The 2 roadblocks are infrastructure challenges and power costs currently making hydrogen economically unviable.....as Tony reminds us white hydrogen may be the solution.....but transportation and storage costs still have to be overcome.
I'm more interested in on mining site green hydrogen generation when there is excess solar and wind generated renewable energy, and if it's perfected, photocatalytic yellow hydrogen. They eliminate transportation costs inherent in white ( mined) hydrogen.
Hydrogen is currently used in minimal worldwide applications, and there's reasons for this.....hopefully one day the obstacles will be removed. I was frustrated when our Gibson Island project was abandoned due to prohibitively expensive green electrons.
No TiM, this is not the 1950s, but hydrogen is STILL yet to fulfil its potential....... I'll be impressed once it's actually in broad scale economically viable applications .....the sooner, the better. The technology evolution and development Universe is in a constant state of flux.
In the meantime, Fortescue has many other decarbonising irons in the fire ......sorry mate, couldn't resist!.....including especially innovative, productive Fortescue Zero and our IO production once the ev Roadrunners, Infinity Train etc are operational.
