Yes, ~90% of hydrogen production is done for oil/ammonia/methanol, but that is changing. Long pipelines are actually somewhat easier than short ones, sometimes a simple lining can be added to avoid embrittlement.

Yes there will be leakages, yes the impact is unknown compared to carbon pollution, but in the end we really only have 2 choices, keep burning fossil fuels or go to hydrogen. Lithium is a stop gap IMO.
