No...a correct read of the article you provided (thanks for that), that was the approved new coal-fired capacity. According to ChatGPT...in 2024, China commissioned 30.5GW of new coal-fired power capacity. This is still a lot, but in 2024 China also added 356GW of wind and solar capacity...more than 10 times new coal power! Interestingly, this is almost equivalent to the entire installed renewables capacity of the USA.

So, is China emphasising clean, low carbon power? Looks that way to me.

However, renewables do need the support of coal to help meet demand when renewables cannot. There is work to be done to address this.

The other question is - why is Chinese demand for electricity growing at such an incredible rate? There are many reasons, but a key one is the rate of electrification of transport. EV sales (12M vehicles in 2024) are close to outstripping ICE vehicle sales and the intercity rail is largely electric. Replacing ICEs with EVs will go some way to offsetting the coal emissions.

I am no apologist for the CCP and am critical of many of their policies and disregard for human rights, but I was in mainland China mid last year and it was very impressive to see what they are doing to transition their economy. I think we need to be wary of the misinformation spread regarding what is happening there. Going there was certainly an eye opener for me.
