Ammonia (NH3) is the one I've heard mentioned as a transportable form for hydrogen. I think you're right about methane, it has too many problems. But every proposed application will be hard. I personally think vastly reduced consumption is an unavoidable path we'll have to take. Better to choose it earlier, rather than have it forced on us later by rolling climate disasters. But the way things are going it'll only happen when it is forced on us.
