Latrobe Valley power generators are asking the Federal Government for compensation if they have to shift to cleaner coal technologies.

The chief executive officer of Loy Yang Power, Ian Nethercote, has confirmed the transition to cleaner power generation to combat climate change will be an expensive one.

He says coal fired power generation will have to continue to supply base load power.

He says if compensation is not provided, some of the smaller coal generating companies may become non-viable.

"Either recovery of additional cost to cover those permitting arrangements or some sort of recompense by either governments or the general public to allow that level of security of supply to continue," he said.

Environment Victoria says subsidies to the coal fired power generation companies will be counter productive and delay the swap to clean technologies.

Energy spokesman Mark Wakeham says the federal and state governments need to put all their available resources into renewable energy.

He says the industry and governments have had enough warning to start making the changes necessary.

"So you actually need this incentive and you need a price on carbon for those clean energy generators to be able to deliver and if you set up that incentive then you throw compensation at the big polluters, you completely remove the incentive to invest in cleaner energy," he said.
