There's about 10 elements on the Periodic Table that can create rechargeable energy storage devices. Aluminium is possibly the least of them when paired with other metals. But given their are 1,000's of PhD students looking to do something of worth and possibly create a minuscule aspect of new science, everything good, bad and ordinary is on the table. This Al ion technology will struggle to commercialisation because fundamentally it will never perform better than L-ion batteries in capacity or cycle life, even though in small cathode mass (coin cells) it might charge a bit quicker. But fast charge is only one aspect. Whereas Lithium Sulphur battery technology ticks all the boxes and collectively performs about 3 -4 times better than L-ion batteries across the board. Proven. If anyone says Al-ion batteries will be the next big thing, they're either wishful thinkers, optimistic students, or simply pump and dump merchants. Deakins work on Li-S technology is world-class and respected by significant peers. It not only works better than anything else available today, but it is expected to be the holy grail of battery technology for decades to come. As for graphene, it is indeed a wonderful conductive carbon matrix and a component of most battery architecture, even Li-S battery architecture (but in an entirely different way). Interestingly Li-S batteries also use Aluminium as an electrode framework. So here is the thing. The patented IP behind Li-S battery technology is so clever, so wholistic and so present day, that it is indeed the battery technology revolution everyone has been waiting for.
