So with the price gains, it's possible the lender is wanting the shares back, so if they do, the call in the shorts, once that happens then its game over for the shorter, he will need to buy on market to get them back.
If the firm is unwilling to continue to lend shares to the short seller, it can require them to close their position. The brokerage firm has the right to call any short seller to return the shares at any point.
