According to the fifth edition of Biotechnology printed in 2009, (http://www.scribd.com/doc/47307590/Edition)the cost to the US market was estimated at $US 2 billion a year. The US has approximately 7-8 times as many dairy cows as Australia.
The US represents about 15% of the market according to this wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dairy_farming
Thus $50 billion would seem to be a stretch, but I'm happy to be corrected if other evidence is available.
