And. Vets don't see ourselves as shopkeepers selling antibiotics etc. The majority of our cashflow needed to run our business comes from physical consultations (we sell our time - selling drugs is a minor part) and in mastitis this is best done by a regular farm visit by a vet who has an intimate knowledge of the industry, the district and the farm; overseeing the operation, close looks at problem cows, educating the farmer to check every quarter pre-milking at a regular time to nip emerging problems in the bud, and if the bulk cell count identifies a problem then this checking needs to intensify and all factors need to be assessed. The antibiotic part of the equation could well be only a small component.
Antibiotc use needs to be policed and this is why only vets are authorised to dispense them for use in milking cows and they should not be overused. Untrained persons have no idea of all the factors involved.
An over the counter remedy like this discussed product will produce no criticism from vets and because it has no health complexities should be sold over the counter with no script. But I bet that it will not significantly reduce the use of antibiotics in mastitis.
You see diligent, smart, farmers can already produce low cell count milk with very low antibiotic use.
Why can't the majority? The answer is that they don't know a lot of things and take short cuts and keep getting caught out. Maybe many will see the new product as a nice shortcut. Will it work significantly? Time and trial will tell.
