Pre-operation checks begin for restart of Kyushu nuclear reactor

The Nuclear Regulation Authority on Monday began pre-operational checks of a reactor at Kyushu Electric Power Co.'s Sendai complex, entering the final process in its safety screening necessary before bringing the unit back online.
Kyushu Electric hopes to finish the procedure by the end of June and restart the No. 1 unit in July, which will mark the first resumption of a nuclear reactor in Japan under more stringent regulations introduced following the 2011 Fukushima meltdowns.
None of Japan's 48 commercial reactors has been in operation since September 2013 amid safety concerns in the wake of the world's worst nuclear accident since the 1986 Chernobyl.
