Ultimately, as far as the company itself is concerned, there is only one owner of each and every share. The registry keeps track of this. Whenever someone tries to take over the company or even whenever there is a vote at the AGM or other meeting, there are no “extra” shares.
Each person who lends out their shares through their broker loses title to those shares and gets IOUs for the same number of shares.
The number of shares in the market remains the same. The market cap does not change.
