Trump has arguably never taken it seriously because being the president hinders his capacity to do business the way he likes it - Mafia style. In private, his tax affairs are nobody's business and he's free from all the scrutiny he has to live with in politics.
He stood to make a hell lot of business from being a presidential candidate, even if he'd lost. That he won was obviously better in many ways than losing, but brought with it all the responsibilities that he clearly doesn't manage well at all.
He'll go of his own accord and blame "the media/the swamp/the left". Now he has a subscriber base that is worth billions at attention to him. They'll donate to causes and buy or boycott whatever he tells them to, just like any crlebrity endorser, so any company or political group who wants to access them will have to do the right thing by Trump.
Bannon has come out of it with a similar deal - he was never going to cut it in politics but the short time in the West Wing will fuel his media career for the rest of his life.
