Copper futures headed for strongest quarterly rise

London copper futures headed for their strongest quarterly gain in almost two years on Monday, with prices expected to remain high despite concerns about global economic growth, analysts said.
Copper for delivery in three months on the London Metal Exchange, often seen as a key gauge of real economic activity, was quoted at $8 430/8 450 a tonne at 09:24 GMT, up $25 from Friday's closing price.
Commodities, including industrial metals,, have been among the strongest performers on world markets so far this year with copper 25% up, in contrast to the MSCI All Country World Index of shares, which is down almost 10 percent, its worst quarter since 2002.
“Commodities look better and better, and equities less and less good,” BNP Paribas analyst David Thurtell said.
“As long as the credit market turmoil persists, commodities could expect to benefit from fund buying.”
On Friday, copper touched $8 608/t, its highest level since March 7. Earlier this month, it hit an all-time peak of $8,820/t.
