several points,
1/ it gives linc control of the sa coal.
2/ better to do a merger now than wait until sxp attracts a takeover from a suitor that you may not want to jv with and who may not be too keen to progress the sa ucg as quickly as linc would like.
3/ it avoids getting involved in a protracted takeover battle down the track and paying too much.
4/ linc can now determine if they want to pursue a jv with someone with deeper pockets than sxp.... it will be on their terms and with whom they choose....they may decide not to jv it out.
5/ linc can now create value from sxp's non ucg interests and sell them which will help to fund the sa ucg activities.
its certainly a good deal for linc but the sxp shareholders will gain also.
every decision linc has made has been for a very good reason.
it also isnt going to affect the demo plant and first liquids.
