The reason we geos tend to drill on intersections rather than in line is because intersections give really specific data on such things as thickness of mineralisation and variation of mineralisation across a vein as well as the actual location of a vein at depth. Drilling along a vein is sometimes used to provide a sample for metallurgical testing. As you say a vertical drill could provide a spectacular result. If the drill actually stayed within the vein, you could get mineralisation from the top of the hole to the bottom.
