Telfer Underground Fire Update
Further to the release (26 May 2005) regarding a fire at the Telfer
underground the status of the underground workings has now been
ascertained.
Early on the morning of May 26 a fire broke out in materials near a
working magazine in the Telfer underground. The majority of the
explosive material in the magazine burnt and an explosion occurred.
The damage from this explosion was confined to a localised area and
services to the underground were cut. All personnel in the mine
were safely evacuated shortly after the event.
Following an inspection over the weekend work commenced to reestablish
the damaged services and power, ventilation,
communications and mine pumping are now operating normally.
Full mine development activities will recommence Tuesday 31 May.
There was no impact from this incident on the open pit operations or
the concentrator activities.
Investigations continue as to the cause of the fire.
