If you read up on Groote you will see that the deposition is Lower Cretaceous in age. Not Proterozoic. There is a massive age difference.
Only the besement rocks are Proterzoic, the cretaceous sediments unconfomably overlie.
The deposit wasn't upgraded. It was deposited insitu as a stratiform consisting of concentric manganese pisolites by microbial activity precipitating the Mn. Fossil evidence is still intact.
Geologically speaking these deposits are chalk and cheese.
