Please see below press release from the General Manager of the Chamber of Mines Namibia in respect of purported comments from the Minister of Mines and Energy.
Whilst there seems to be some substance to the media speculation about increased government involvement in the Namib mining industry, existing EPLs / Mining licenses etc are not in scope for the proposed amendments to the Minerals Act. This should be confirmed by the Minister in a press conference shortly (including EPLs that are still being processed).
Please also be aware that these proposed amendments have NOT been formally gazzetted or ratified by parliament and therefore have no legal effect. Which means the old Minerals Act will prevail for many months to come by which time MLS EPL will have been renewed.
