Layman myself, but good pressure will certainly help with lifting the oil out of the hole, a down hole pump requires plenty of lifting for maintenance, especially in oil sand, so good pressure will help them regulate the flow through chokes for as long as they can before needing pump assistance.
That's my take on it anyway.
