China Bx Import Rises Slightly in July

According to statistics from China Customs, bauxite imports reached 3.63 mln t this July, down 27.43% year on year and up 3.65% month on month, while bauxite imports from January to July amounted to 28.82 mln t, up 4.87% year on year. Except for an increase in the import of Australian bauxite, bauxite imports from Guinea, Brazil, Malaysia and Ghana remained stable in July while those from India dropped to zero.

Monthly bauxite imports have been at a low level over the past few months. The increasing alumina production resumptions and expansions have driven bauxite consumption up, leading to a long-term shortage of imported bauxite supply over demand. Most bauxite importers are reducing their inventories and those with small inventories are under pressure from production. Moreover, the increase in the bauxite imported from Australia and Guinea cannot make up the gap caused by decreased imports of Malaysian bauxite. These are placing huge pressures the imported bauxite market in the second half of 2016.
