barry, Companies still go on making profits even in recessions. Things dont just keep going down even when there is negative growth. When the panic stops stocks will be priced by what they are considered to be worth in the medium to long term. BHP should still do ok because its contracts are locked in and its main customer is China who remains cashed up and still growing strong at 8-12% pa.
