For pneumonia, Lefamulin has been on the market for just over 1 y. It is perhaps the most expensive antibiotic drug. 5 day treatment is usual.
The cost will likely be a barrier to lefamulin use. A press release from the manufacturer stated that the wholesale acquisition cost of lefamulin will be $205 per day for intravenous treatment and $275 per day for oral treatment. I do not know how much more it will cost to the patient or the insurance firm.
My guess is that the penicillin- PBT2 combination will replace it. We will see if that will happen one day.
