I have been in the place you describe.
I think that putting your money where your mouth is on the stock market is a high-level psychological exercise. You cannot help but expose your own personality and character vulnerabilities to yourself. Impatience, greed, Gordon Gekko fantasy world - and the rest. Personally, I think that is the way to look at it - a kind of self-education.
