I don't see it as an attack on religion, more a questioning of beliefs. If someone wants to bring up politics, ideology, self interest, the nature of self interest and bias, etc, that's fine. Religion comes up most of the time because that's what people seem to want to talk about.

I brought up oligarchies and religion in my reply to ppm, but only religion was discussed so it seems that you are correct - religion is the main focus.

I thought that ppm may have brought up a suggestion that oligarchies often misuse religion to create their power base.
