I think it's just the buyers trying to get the best price at auction.
Putting in massive bids to make the sellers feel safe they're going to get a good price, then pulling enough of the bids to make the price fall in order to get in cheaper, while still getting the total amount (minus 2) on offer below close.
Good to know there's demand from those that have that resource.
