GST is paid by the supplier on the difference between GST paid on inputs and GST collected from sales. It is not just a 10% tax on everything from the merchants point of view. It is the consumer that gets hit with the 10% tax, not the supplier. Secondly, foreign suppliers have no deductions that they can offest against the imposition of a 10% Australian GST on imports. If such a tax was applied by an Australian governement it can only be classed as an import tax, and foreign governement would be entitled to apply the same level tax on Australian exports to their countries. This would dicriminate against many Australian exporters e.g. wine, dairy products, IT, cars etc etc. Is this what people really want?
