The government has done a stupendously poor job of educating the public about fracking. They left a void and you know who filled it - and you know what they filled it with. I think it's remarkably poor politics to invest political capital in shale gas without protecting your flank by putting in place a big educational program, but that's just me.
The government is more than just talk. What is going on behind the scenes is much more forceful than what they say in the press. We caught a glimpse of it in the leaked letter from the three ministers last year. It's just that even with a concerted push, there's only so much they can do within the system when opposition is pushing back every step of the way. As you said, the only way out at this point is to get going and show the country that fracking isn't destructive -- to demonstrate with real world experience the treachery that has come from the anti frackers.
