Lyle D. Joyce, M.D., Ph.D. is a Professor of Surgery, Interim Chief of the Division of Cardiovascular and Thoracic Surgery, and Surgical Director of the Ventricular Assist Device program. Dr. Joyce received his medical degree from Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas, and his Ph.D. from the University of Minnesota. He completed his general surgery residency at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, a cardiovascular pathology residency at Miller Hospital in St. Paul, and completed his cardiothoracic surgery fellowship training at the University of Utah.

Dr. Joyce is considered a leader in the advancement of cardiac surgery. As co-surgeon, he implanted the first Jarvik total artificial heart in 1982. Additionally, Dr. Joyce implanted the first female artificial heart, and went on to successfully implant the Jarvik into a 13 year old boy, who became the youngest patient ever to receive an artificial heart.

Upon returning to the University of Minnesota in 2003, Dr. Joyce is very involved in the cardiac assist and heart transplant programs, as well as other adult cardiovascular surgery.

Dr. Joyce has authored over 75 manuscripts published in the medical literature, has contributed chapters to several books related to his field, and lectures frequently throughout the United States

Prior to joining University of Minnesota Physicians, Dr. Joyce spent 23 years in an active cardiac, thoracic, and vascular surgery practice in the Twin Cities and served as Director of the Heart Replacement Program at the Minneapolis Heart Institute.

Dr. Joyce is board certified in General and Thoracic Surgery.
