skint,
the point is, you could run your own school! There are many people who do so: Ethnic schools, religious schools, language schools, trade schools, schools for film, for theatre for the arts; schools for economists, highly and truly elite schools which raise politicians of one political agenda or another... etc, etc etc!
No probs with that! Anyone should be able to open a business anywhere in this country and so long as that business is run lawfully and pays its dues to our great political dieties in Canbera, I have no objections whatsover.
I bring my objections to bear only when it comes to my being FORCED to subsidise one business over another. Why should I subsidise private schools and not private hospitals? Why should I subsidise roads on top and above what my allocation is in my taxes?
I'd prefer to subsidise a local butcher shop, or grocery because it's run by a charitable organisation than a private school which keeps investing in real estate and in sporting venues and equipment, which spends its money (taxpayer's money) on expensive excursions and expensive renovations, and on teachers whom they poach from other countries?
NO THANKS!
You wanna do your own thing? Fine, but don't ask me to pay for it! And I certainly wouldn't want to fund the entrance of your kids to a uni when my kids's school can't even get enough teachers!
Unfortunately, these "Private School" businesses, play a double game: When they need money, they call themselves "schools" but when they're asked to be accountable for what they're doing with that money and in their classrooms, they call themselves a "business" and hide behind the "confidantiality" clauses of business!
Give us a break!
