Hmmm ... the entire debate is flawed as the numbers should relate to funding per 'student' ... not school. Both sides need to clean up the debate so that the electorate can understand the policies.
My understanding of Howards policy is to fund 'independent' schools at $2000 per student which he argues saves the Govt $8000 against public school costs of $10000 per kid.
The expansion of independent schools in recent times seems to support this.
The $2000 figure is some notional amount that somehow relates to the fact that parents paying fees are also 'taxpayers' also and accordingly have 'some' entitlement to Govt support.
Most independent schools (formerly private schools) have a religious faith/worship ethos which some parents feel is important.
In times past, private schools were an extension of the English class system and had an extensive 'old boy network' which opened many doors. Put Kings/Newington/St.Josephs on yer CV and you know who will get the job ... sad but true.
