The proposal announced today to develop a major hydrogen project in the south-east corner of our State is an exciting prospect.
As we all know, Western Australia has plenty of wind, and plenty of sun. We're the perfect spot for major renewable projects.
In particular, the emerging hydrogen industry presents a great opportunity for our State by converting renewable energy into a clean fuel that can be transported or exported.
Hydrogen has the potential to help our State, and the world, towards a clean energy future, creating ongoing jobs, investment and a new, skilled, future-proof industry for WA.
The Western Green Energy Hub, in the Goldfields-Esperance region, aims to produce up to 50 gigawatts of renewable energy across 15,000 square kilometres, delivering up to 3.5 million tonnes of renewable hydrogen or 20 million tonnes of green ammonia each year.
Importantly, the project is a collaboration between the Mirning traditional owners and industry, and would be a transformational opportunity for the community.
It is very early days for this proposal - but we look forward to working with the consortium as they continue to move towards an investment decision.
