The Australian sharemarket closed marginally higher on Wednesday, following a whipsaw day of trading that pushed the index between positive and negative territory.
The S&P/ASX 200 index closed 1.7 points, or 0.03 per cent, lower at 6195.9, as the index recorded its fourth loss in as many sessions.
Despite the ASX futures indicating a fall at the open, the sharemarket rose early on the strength in resources stocks. BHP Billiton and Rio Tinto were among the market leaders on Wednesday, following the gains made overnight by their respective US listed shares. BHP Billiton rose 1.8 per cent to $33.23, while Rio Tinto moved 0.4 per cent higher to $82.08.
Overnight strength in oil prices supported energy stocks on Wednesday. A big decline in US oil stocks, production losses in Canada, uncertainty over Libyan exports and the US warning to allied nations to cut Iranian oil imports to zero by November combined to propel oil prices higher. Among domestic energy stocks, Woodside Petroleum rose 1.4 per cent to $35.05, Beach Energy closed 3.7 per cent higher at $1.70 while Oil Search closed at $8.69, up 2.2 per cent.
