Backed by CSIRO, Probiotic will soon announce launch of a major pharmacy-based weight management strategy.
The weight management market is currently dominated by Weight Watchers.
PBP has signed up 200 of Australia's 5000 pharmacies to launch the program.
The pharmacies belong to the Chemmart, Amcal and Queensland-based Malouf chains.
Each of the pharmacies will pay a fee to PBP to allow them to run the program featuring a new, CSIRO-backed brand called Impromy.
These fees are expected to meet all training and other costs up to the launch and to contribute to post-launch marketing and advertising costs.
The pharmacies expect initial sales to total $500,000-$1m per store per year.
Customers/patients will pay a one-off membership fee of $49.95.
For this they'll receive a copy of CSIRO's Simply Well cookbook, two PBP dairy protein shakes, a snack bar and a smart phone app designed by CSIRO and tested at its Adelaide clinical facility.
The app will provide support and stimulus to improve program results.
Customers who join the program are expected to spend $10 a day.
Their weight management program will be supervised by a PBP-CSIRO trained pharmacy consultant and will include protocols for regularly measuring weight, blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol.
Customers will have access to expert telephone and online information - as will pharmacists, doctors and potential customers.
Probiotec is aiming to launch the Impromy program in May/June.
