I think my 'problem' was due to me never before using the Telstra bigpond email function. I'd always logged into my TLS account using my hotmail address. But I now wanted to make use of the bigpond email address.
Sooooooooooo .... after some intuitive work by a TLS support guy (the previous two people misunderstood my problem and didnt tell me to log on using the bigpond user name) I logged onto my TLS account using my username-bigpond.com rather than username-hotmail.com.
I did have to get the TLS support to reset my password though before logging on.
