I am thinking the low grade auctions is a neccesity, right? ATP produces pearls, but can't fully control the quality. A proportion must be "low grade" and those don't sell through the regular auction. So they must be sold at the Bali auction regardless. Otherwise, they just go to waste. The hope is for the quality of the harvests to improve so that these low grade pearls are a minority...
I used to think the Kobe auction is a large industry event but I have come to realise it's actually just ATP selling, no other vendors (correct me if I am wrong).... I wonder then why continue with this process if we can at all avoid it... would fixed pricing be a better model if demand has cooled compared to H1 24...
