Worth remebering that methane is being made continually deep in the earth's crust - either through thermogenic or biogenic means - and slowly migrates towards the surface until it emerges in soil and water before ending up in the atmosphere.

Some of this methane is trapped in rock formations such as sandstone (conventional gas) or less porous rocks such as shale. Along the way some of the gas is polymerised into heavier hydrocarbons - leading to so called "wet" gas.

Even the trapped gas is slowly released - enhanced by earth tremours - the natural world's own fraccing procedure.

All a natural process - in fact, without this methane our planet would have been exceptionlly cold and unable to support life - methane provided the original global warming event and made all life possible.

Sadly, we live in an Age of Ignorance - which happens to suit most people. Science is dead or dying and Enquiry is seen as heretical. But we are taught to want more of everything and that boosts energy demand and Shale Gas will be part of the answer.
