bh,
The Charters Towers granite system is quite dry, not wet. Most of Australia's geothermal potential is from hot dry rock, where water is pumped down into the hot dry rock and emerges as steam to drive turbines, unlike hydrothermal areas such as New Zealand's Rotorua area.
Unfortunately and fortunately, the Charters Towers geothermal gradient is quite low, about one degree per hundred metres of depth, so at 2000m there is little potential for geothermal energy. The upside is that underground mine temperatures at CT will also be low, delaying any requirement for refrigerated ventilation. There is potential to generate their own electricity from Pelton Wheel turbines, using the pressure head of the water they put down pipelines into the mine for drilling, to turn the turbines. They will implement this when the water volumes and depth of workings make it viable.
