As one looks to invest or in my case reinvest in AVL there is difficulty in drawing a line to a potential outcome.
All the noble intentions of a pit to battery strategy and state and federal government rhetoric, to me there are so many more questions than answers.
To get AVL's vanadium into batteries is going to require a project build with an estimated capex of circa A$700-900m.
Who and how is that going to get funded?
Given steel off take agreements for 10,000 tonnes a year as collateral for funding isn't happening given the price of vanadium... How big and how many batteries underwrites a project build and who will do that?
Vanadium for a battery is essentially a one off so the equivalent yearly battery size using AVL vanadium will need to be 1-1.2 GWh per year....so there would need to be potentially binding commitments for collectively 5-6 GWh of vanadium batteries minimum to underwrite a project build assuming a 5 year payback.
Those close to the company in my opinion should suggest to management to include a model/flow chart of how this all comes together going forward and potential counterparties capable of making it happen
All the company sound bites and government slogans doesn't make a compelling case to buy shares in the short to medium unless an ignorant market becomes better aware of the how the potential can be realised.
