Temporary migration has changed the nature of Australia’s migration program, with an increasing number of migrants now coming to Australia on a temporary visa and, via “two-steps” or more, moving towards permanent residency.
“That is the big story of the last two decades of Australian immigration, the massive increase in temporary migration,” Collins says.
“From 1947, the emphasis was settler-migration, bringing in new people to build the nation. But now, temporary migration far outweighs permanent: 700,000 or so temporary visas compared to 200,000 on permanent visas.

So on that earlier chat related to pushing up house prices and living cost increases net migration is stated again at 240,000 but population growth all up 388,000.

Australia's population is still growing at a solid 1.6 per cent a year despite a slowdown in net overseas immigration towards the end of 2017.
The latest demographic figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics showed the population grew by 388,000 last year to a total of 24.8 million.
The ABS said based on current projections Australia should have a population of 25 million by early August.
Net overseas migration increased by 240,400 over the year and accounted for around 62 per cent of the increase, but appears to be slowing.
