The Government met this afternoon with leaders from across the community sector including unions, social services, environment groups and local government to discuss Australia?s transition to a low-pollution economy.
A key focus of the first meeting of the Non-Government Organisation (NGO) Roundtable on Climate Change was to ensure that the views of the wider community are heard and considered in relation to the Government?s climate change policies, including considerations for the introduction of a carbon price.
Today?s meeting in Canberra outlined how the NGO Roundtable would operate and also how members would play a role in providing advice to the Government on this important economic and environmental reform.
At the meeting there was widespread support for the Government?s efforts to introduce a carbon price into our economy.
Roundtable Members discussed a range of topics, including how to support the necessary investments in low pollution technologies and how to assist the community to transition to a low pollution future, having particular regard for low income earners and pensioners.
Roundtable Members also urged the Government to have a strong public engagement and communications campaign on the issue of climate change and a carbon price.
The NGO Roundtable members agreed to continue their discussions, with further meetings planned in February and April, followed by monthly meetings from June through the second half of 2011.
The Government thanked all of the members for participating in the first NGO Roundtable and their commitment to ongoing dialogue in making the transition to a low-pollution economy.
It hardly news that the goverment will run out alot of information as Abbott already knows its been called for by non goverment bodies.Kind of funny he wants play politics with something like this that is common knowledge to those closer to the action or choose to look. But im like the rest of us just one little mushroom i just dont choose to be under his "stool".
