    I agree that more police on the beat provide an excellent deterrent.

    But, by way of example, the Criminal Code Act of Queensland provides for a penalty for the offence of Burglary, as "life imprisonment". You can't legislate for a much higher penalty than that, other than capital punishment.

    But, what do the weak Judges hand out?

    Probation or suspended sentences!!!!

    The result is that the recidivist offenders are released to once again prey upon the community. Before long, they are arrested again, only to re appear in Court for another "slap on the wrist".

    Ever had your house broken into? I have. The scum that did it had a rap sheet longer than a Mozart concerto. And yet, he was out and about, free to continue his exploits.

    The Law is not the problem. The problem remains the Judges and Magistrates, and the professional bleeding hearts whose life is spent making up excuses for criminals.

    When the Courts fail in their responsibilities, that's when politicians start talking about mandatory sentences.
