We bike through the gorge regularly , to me 80% of the appeal is the old abandoned mining sites beside where the railway track (now bike track ) use to be and 20% the regrowth yes some gorse and broom but also young native trees growing back .
It seems the greenies do not know the difference between open cast mining and underground mining , which will cause no actual mining damage providing tailings are carefully managed and processing is done that mitigates risks .
The biggest issue I would have is truck movements on the road if they process the ore offsite , this could be eliminated if they processed ore on site, and yet the greenies wanted ore taken off site to process which seems environmentally unsound .
Cyanide is killed by sunlight after a few days it does not leave lasting residues compared to arsenic and acidic tailings which could possibly be returned to the mining drives after they are mined out .
If the MD shows the mining process is responsible and then critics continue making false claims they will be seen by the general populous as fools . Hopefully this will result in a mine as there is quite high unemployment in Paeroa
