Definitely a possibility - as I said - all have their own reasons.
But - you call it smart then say tail between legs?
If they made a profit then they did what they set out to do no tail between legs there.
Always possible as well that people leave a stock realising it will settle down until the next Ann and as such go invest somewhere else for a few weeks then buy back in if they believe in the Mgmt, Co. and the product.
Is all good and it will be what it will be in the wash up.
