Your last line is why James is in the bible to remind you that you do to both deeds and have faith. But James also points out the fallacy of deeds without faith as well. Also without God I could be committing genocide and thinking that I am serving humanity, as there is no unifyuing moral code unless we follow God.
As for Christianity never coming back into popularity I am sad to say that won't happen. If I am correct Australia has one of the highest rates of mental illness in the world and one of the lowest in practicing faith. I believe this is causal.
