Two days of public hearings for nuclear prohibition inquiry
This week the Legislative Council’s Environment and Planning Committee will hold two days of public hearings for its inquiry into nuclear prohibition.
The public hearings will be broadcast live on the Victorian Parliament’s website from 10:00 am to 3:30 pm on Thursday 25 June and Friday 26 June.
A range of organisations including community associations, peak bodies, unions and environmental groups will be presenting at the hearings. The schedule is available from the Committee’s website.
Under the terms of reference for the inquiry, the Committee is considering the current prohibitions on nuclear-related activities and whether there are economic, environmental and social benefits for Victoria from removal of those prohibitions.
The Nuclear Activities (Prohibitions) Act 1983 prohibits various nuclear-related activities, including exploration for the production of uranium or thorium ore concentrates, conversion or enrichment of any nuclear material, and construction or operation of a nuclear reactor.
Among the issues being examined are:

• the potential for Victoria to contribute to global low carbon dioxide energy production through enabling exploration and production of uranium and thorium
• economic, environmental and social benefits for Victoria, including those related to medicine, scientific research, exploration and mining
• opportunities for Victoria to participate in the nuclear fuel cycle
• any barriers to participation, including limitations caused by federal or local laws and regulations.
