Last time l checked, electricity consumers in Australia had a direct arrangement with energy providers , not public servants . Therefore it will be very hard for public servants to control your toaster in the future.
We are already seeing both here and overseas where energy providers are offering very flexible contracts for customers where the customer has lots of options to obtain very cheap and sometimes free electricity as they partner with the energy provider.
By utilising home solar home batteries and ev storage capacity , we will end up with a very efficient electricity grid that will be closely matched to demand. That means there will be plenty of electricity all the time and it will be cheap .
lnstead of relying on a handful of lumbering, very inefficient baseload that can't idle and very, very expensive peakers that game the system, we will have millions of energy providers that can be managed to to the watt.
E.g. #1 Getting a few million air conditioners to raise their temperature setting by 1 degree for a few minutes will have a greater effect than peakers could only dream of. That means we won't have to pay for all those expensive peakers that only run for a few hours per year .
E.g. #2 . Having 10 million domestic energy storage devices that are controllable to the watt will give the grid operator a huge amount of flexibility .
For the first time ever domestic consumers will have complete control of their energy . No longer will they be penalised for using power in certain parts of the day . No longer will their power bills be dictated by some cartel or political whack job on the other side of the planet . No longer will their power bills be dictated by Australian politicians in the pocket of big coal or Murdoch.
lf people choose to they can go off grid in a city easily . Something they haven't been able to do before.
For the rest time the average householder will be able to become an energy provider and make money from their property .
Yes , the energy provider will have a tiny amount of agreed control of some of your devices but they will also need your devices to manage the grid. lnstead of a one way street that it has been for ever , in the future it will be a two way street . E.g. when they have too much electricity they will be looking to dump it . That means they will be charging your ev for free . This already happens in the Uk right now .
