Introduction The gold standard for counting cough is video surveillance of
a subject coughing, followed by video playback and visual scoring of the
number of coughs. This method is less practical if cough is to be assessed in
a routine laboratory or for research purposes. We aim to assess the accuracy
to detect cough using a portable acoustic monitor compared to video surveillance
to count cough in persons performing a routine mannitol challenge.
The manual identification of cough using acoustic monitoring
provides similar information to video monitoring for the analysis of cough frequency
in provoked models of cough such as the mannitol challenge.
Key Words cough, mannitol, acoustic monitoring.
