Forest group says mill compo possible

Map: Bell Bay 7253 The forest industry in Tasmania believes the timber company Gunns would be able to seek compensation if the in-coming State Government decided to stop the pulp mill.
The Forest Industries Association of Tasmania says it would be a breach of faith on past State and Commonwealth decisions if the goal posts were changed, given Gunns' expenditure on the proposed northern Tasmanian mill.
FIAT's chief executive Terry Edwards says Gunns has been given strict permits to operate the mill.
"If those rules were to change at this late change with Gunns having already expended many millions of dollars it would constitute a very serious breach of faith by the Tasmanian Government in this instance," he said.
"In those circumstances it is our opinion that Gunns would be entitled to compensation from the Government for changing the rules so late in the game."
Activist and corporate governance lecturer Tom Baxter says there is no legal basis to the compensation claims.
"There's nothing in the Act requiring compensation," he said.
"Mr Edwards has referred to a commitment by the State Government.
"We're not sure what commitment he's referring to so it would be helpful if Mr Edwards could explain what is that commitment and what's the basis for that compensation.
