The cost to build a big dam would be enormous. Lots of fossil fuels burned in the process.
Then what do you fill it with? Saline sea water or bore water? Huge area flooded, massive loss of ecosystem.
The list goes on.
Except in limited places, hydro sucks if you ask me.
A big tidal system would make more sense.
You can produce massive amounts of nuclear energy in a very remote and secure location, and problem is solved for at least 2-300 hundred years.
